The engine ran fine, so I knew I had a pump problem
My Troy-Bilt Model 01902 power washer with a 6.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine began to leak high volumes of water during use, not to mention I wasn’t getting any water pressure. The engine ran fine, so I knew I had a pump problem. After looking at You Tube videos regarding DIY repair of the pump itself, I decided it was too much work to rehabilitate the old pump and I began to shop for a new one. OEM replacement pumps were well over half the cost of the power washer itself. Buying a new washer was obviously much more, so I looked for alternative pumps. That’s when I came across this one which was half the cost of the factory replacement ones I had seen. I ordered it and received the pump in a matter of a few days (very quickly, kudos to the ROP shop). It came all prepped and well packaged, so all I had to do was install.Installation was fairly simple. The pump mount was a little different from the one that originally came with the power washer (note: it’s an older washer that I’ve had for more than ten years!). The holes align perfectly to the frame and motor, however (as recommended by the supplier) you’ll need to buy longer bolts for mounting. I replaced the original 2 inch and 3 inch 5/16th bolts with two 3 inch and one 3.5 inch 5/16-18 bolts which are plenty long enough. I also purchased new flange nuts that go with the new bolts (the old nuts would not work with the new bolts although they are spec’d the same).One mounting issue I ran into was on one of the mounting legs between the motor frame and pump. The motor housing interfered with one of the pump legs preventing it from being fully tightened (see photo). This prevented the motor and pump from sitting flush against one another causing a slight misalignment of the motor shaft with the pump. I placed three 5/16th washers at each of the three attaching points between the pump and frame, which essentially lowered the pump a bit while keeping it vertically aligned. Doing this allowed me to fully tighten the pump to the frame and motor.The whole installation took a few minutes. I tested the new pump and it works great (…still need to put it through a real test which I will do this weekend). The washers seem to work and the engine runs smoothly with the pump, …just like it did ten years ago!So if your motor is good, try this pump before investing in a new power washer.
