After training and studying for years, you’ve earned a degree: now what? How to get a job and have a career as an actor is the number one question facing emerging artists and one which this book answers for you.
While performing arts schools do a great job of teaching how to act, most don’t teach you how to launch and sustain a career. This book addresses this fundamental aspect of your creative journey, delivering a precise formula to help you organize the next chapter of your life. It helps you to find work and proactively build a career by providing the tools you’ll need to connect with working professionals within the industry.
If acting is your business, you must run it as a business. Positioning you as CEO of your own company, this book uses a boardroom table as a visual model. At that table are 7 key positions, each representing an area of action and expertise that you must understand to build a successful career. With worksheets and tools, supplemented throughout with interviews with industry professionals from North America, the UK and Europe, and Australia, and further supported by a companion website, this action plan will empower and equip you to achieve your career goals.

Systemized for Longevity
Iâm an actor and Iâve booked a good couple of roles on well-known television shows⦠And I have to say that I appreciate how Wendy has systemized this approach to ensure an Artistâs longevity; everyone from those who are fresh out of acting programs, to even people in my position, to more experienced actors⦠I think the reason I value this book the most is because it creates a healthy compartmentalization of the various hats that we have to wear in order to ensure that our Business venture, as an actor, is sustained for years to come⦠Itâs a measured, progressive and systemic approach to dealing with the issues that uniquely face Artists. She breaks down everything from treating our business no differently than an S&P 500 company. That means our inner CEO, CFO, Biz Development, Creative director, Marketing, Outreach, and HR âselvesâ clearly understand their duties, and makes us schedule it out in our week to ensure that the whole operation is viable⦠When I met her in person, her advice of â just because you pivot doesnât mean you are a failure, or that things didnât work out⦠When you step into your power and expand in your joy, it actually serve your art for moreâ. I highly recommend, and in fact, I have already recommended this to a few folks! Thank you, Wendy!!!

A must read for the astray actor
I read this book after a taking a year of business classes taught by Wendy. I feel like this book is that year in her class wrapped in paperback. Everything in this book is designed to allow the actor to take control of their career and remind them that they have power. In a career with so many nos, this book provides reminders, checks and balances, that the actorâs worth isnât reliant of commercial success or the yeses. This book inspired me to have less hope in fate and more hope in myself. It gives you the tools to own your career as an actor and feel sound in your foundation. This is a toolbox of techniques, tips, and tricks to guide actors to feel complete as an artists but more importantly as a people. Wendy being a mother, educator, and actress herself really considered the emotional side of being an actor when writing this book. There are tools in this book to help you be a smarter and better actor, but also to fuel your human side. Wendy places just as much emphasis on the importance of mental and physical health, volunteer and community work, and gaining life experiences outside of acting as she does with business advice. This mixture of savvy business strategy combined with the emotional and nurturing side that comes with being an actor makes this book different than any others like it. This really takes the truth of being a working actor and lays it out in front of you in an accessible and targetable way. Thank you Wendy for the lessons, and for putting them in this book so I donât have to use my college notebook every time Iâm feeling lost.

Excellent book
Author and Casting Director Wendy Kurtzman has written an invaluable guide for actors and creative artists who want to succeed. Filled with insight and so much practical wisdom, I enjoyed reading her insider perspective on how to manage and navigate your career and the business. This should be required reading for every graduating theater major, MFA student and aspiring actor in programs all across the country. I am a former studio exec who sat in countless casting auditions for series, and I can tell you with great certainty that actors whoâve read this book will have clarity and a leg up. I highly recommend.

A must read for actors and those who love us
After my senior showcase in NYC, I found myself thinking of these words so often as a guide post for this crazy point in life. Iâm so greatful for everything Wendy taught me, and now my mom too! She read this book and brought it with her here to New York for showcase to re read because itâs been so helpful for her as someone supporting someone in this industry that doesnât get the life experience we do to understand how to navigate it. Itâs been such a helpful tool for both me and my family, we are all forever grateful. MUST READ THIS BOOK!!
